Bear it
Bearing it as a female architect is omni-present in my tiny autonomous practice. My work bears all of its meaning in drawing as a social equalizer, and this portfolio reflects the clear and straightforward dedication to this representational methodology. The black and white nature of this portfolio is very purposeful in that it removes all extraneous decoys of popularized digital manipulations.
Almost all of the drawings within the portfolio are intentionally orthographic projections in order to flatten the imagery into new figure ground scalar relationships spanning both building and landscape design that bring the work into an understandable collective whole. This collective whole always begins in the form of competition briefs, which are built upon for content involving causes driven by social equality within historic contexts. Locations such as the Astrodome, Negro Remembrance Building, New York State Pavilion, Washington Square Park and others are sites for interventions which are simultaneously practical and poetic.
The portfolio hopefully reflects and demonstrates the balance between these aspects of architecture, projecting the work and its means of representation forward toward additional social causes in the future of my practice. The search for such causes and their connection to social equality will always be at the forefront as a driving force in my architecture and design work. Lastly, a black and white and sometimes grey portfolio may seem antiquated, but it only reinforces the ideals of a practice bearing all of its work in the realm of everyday social polarities.
